HOW TO GET A COMMERCIAL DRIVER'S LICENSE IN ALABAMA

A CDL driver’s license in Alabama comes with more responsibility than a normal driver’s license, since you will be driving a large vehicle, transporting people and/or carrying dangerous materials. The first step to understanding how to apply to a commercial driver’s license in Alabama is understanding the type of commercial license you need. They come in three different classes: Classes A, B and C. Classes A and B both allow the driver to operate vehicles that are heavier than 26,000 pounds, with the difference being that Class A license holders can tow a vehicle that weighs more than 10,000 pounds, while Class B license holders are restricted to towing vehicles lighter than that. Class C is for vehicles that can sit at least 16 people. Drivers with an A Class license can drive vehicles that require a B and C license, while B license drivers can drive vehicles that require a C Class license.

Along with classes, there are a number of endorsements that you can get, which allow you to drive different sorts of commercial vehicles. Because of the extra responsibility involved in driving commercial vehicles, the CDL license requirements in Alabama are stricter than they are for regular licenses: you will need to take a test that proves you understand the material covered in the Commercial Drivers Manual. Then, you must get a learner’s permit for two weeks. Only after that point will you be able to get your CDL license.
