How to Get a Real ID in Alabama

A REAL ID in Alabama is a type of secure credential approved by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). You may choose to obtain a REAL ID driver’s license or identification card from the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA) if you want a card with enhanced security features. These cards are differentiated from standard IDs with a gold star in the corner. Aside from having a star on it, a secure credential is the same as a standard ID or license and comes with the same requirements and privileges.

While this type of credential is entirely optional right now, you may need to have a secure ID in the future. Starting in 2020, REAL IDs will be required to enter federal facilities or board domestic airline flights. If you do not have a license or ID card that complies with these requirements, you may still use a passport or another form of DHS-approved identification to travel and enter federal facilities.

In order to add a gold star on driver's license credentials, you will need to visit an ALEA office in person and submit a variety of documentation proving your identity, legal presence, date of birth and residential address. An original REAL ID driver license can only be issued in person, but once you have a card, you may renew it and do other tasks online.
