Requirements for Transferring a Car Title

In order to transfer car titles in Alabama, your motor vehicle must be no older than 35 years, and pass safety and emissions testing. In addition, there are certain vehicle ownership documents needed to complete the car titles transfer process.  Prepare to present:

  • The original manufacturer car certificate of title or proof of car ownership from the current vehicle owner.
  • A bill of sale that has been signed by both the car seller and the car buyer.
  • The vehicle registration papers (if the car is not currently titled).

The fee to transfer a car title in Alabama costs $15. In addition, a $1.50 handling fee is required by the car titling office.

Car Title Transfer for New Alabama Residents

If you are a new resident to the state of Alabama, you are able to apply for a vehicle title transfer with ease. All you need to do is:

  • Bring your current out-of-state title to your local license plates issuing office and prepare to pay the designated fee.
  • Obtain your car registration certificate and present it to the issuing office as validation of possession.
  • Have the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) on hand.

Car Titling from New Car Purchases

If you buy a new car, transferring the title of the vehicle will be easier for you because the car dealership will handle this on your behalf. Note that:

  • All required legal and completed documents have to be present and in good standing.
  • A signed proof of title transfer is required, and a nominal fee for certain forms associated with the vendor will be obligatory.
