Alabama Drivers License Change of Address Methods

If you have re-located in the state of Alabama, you may ask yourself “How do I change my address on my drivers license?” Luckily, you have two options, and it all depends on your choice of where to change your address. AL drivers can choose from the following address change request methods:

  • In Person
  • By Mail

Change Address on Drivers License in Person

Completing an official address update in Alabama must be completed with the Driver License Division. If you need to update your drivers license address, you can apply to your probate judge or license commissioner’s office in person.

During this appointment, you will need to provide the following information:

  • Your full name
  • Your drivers license number
  • Your new address

Remember that if you want a corrected drivers license that reflects your updated address, you will have to pay a duplicate fee.

Change Address on Drivers License by Mail

You can also complete an AL drivers license address change request by mail. The process is identical to conducting an official address change in person. Simply notify the DPS within 30 days with a letter including the following:

  • Your full name
  • Your AL drivers license/ID card number
  • Your new address

Send the letter to:

Driver License Division P.O. Box 1471 Montgomery, AL 36104

Keep in mind that this will only update your address on DPS records. If you want a corrected AL drivers license reflecting your new address, you will have to apply for a duplicate drivers license and pay the required fee.

Updating Your Address with USPS

Besides conducting a drivers license address change request, it is also necessary that you update your address with the United States Postal Service (USPS). As part of the moving process, this is critical so that you will receive important bills, doctor’s notices and other mail at your new address.

In order to carry out a mailing address update, you have three options:

Online – This is the easiest method, as you can update your mailing address using the online portal. A $1 verification fee will be charged to your credit card for utilizing this service.

Telephone – Alternatively, you can call 1-800-ASK-USPS to request a mailing address change over the phone. Again, a $1 verification fee will be charged to your credit card.

In Person – You can also download, fill out and submit a USPS Change of Address form in person at your local post office. The best part about this address update method is the cost; it’s free.
