Reporting Your Lost or Stolen Drivers License
One aspect of losing your drivers license that often gets overlooked is possible identity theft. The Alabama Department of Public Safety (DPS) takes this seriously and suggests that you report a stolen drivers license or lost drivers license to the proper law enforcement authorities in order to help prevent identity theft. While this isn’t required by law, it’s still a smart step to take in the unfortunate even that you must replace drivers licenses.
Drivers License Replacement Online
Should you choose the online drivers license replacement route, get started by visiting the state’s online portal. Once you have logged on, you will need to provide the following information:
- Date of Birth
- Social Security Number
- Payment for duplicate drivers license fee
Keep in mind that only the following licenses can be renewed or replaced using the state of Alabama’s online system:
- Drivers license
- Commercial Drivers License (CDL)
- State ID Cards
- Star ID
Once you have completed the online drivers license replacement process, you will be able to print out a 30-day temporary driving license. Your permanent drivers license will arrive in the mail within 30 days.
Replacing Your AL Drivers License in Person
The other option to replace your lost, stolen or damaged Alabama drivers license is to visit your Probate Judge or License Commissioner Office in person.
To apply for a duplicate drivers license in person, you will need to bring acceptable identification such as a certified birth certificate. Remember to also bring an acceptable form of payment for the duplicate drivers license fee.
Replacing Your AL Drivers License by Mail
For Alabama residents who are out of the state, such as military personnel, losing your drivers license can be daunting. However, you can obtain a drivers license copy while out of state by applying by mail.
Start by downloading and completing the Application for a Renewal or Duplicate License For Alabama Drivers Temporarily Out of State. Follow the instructions on the form and remember to include a money order for $36.25 for the replacement drivers license fee.
